Knots Rugs has its roots in a family business going back three generations. Alfred Sutton, a much loved figure in the industry, was a young man whose interest and appreciation of the artistry, craft and beauty of hand woven rugs grew into a life long occupation and study of carpets and textiles.

Having first joined the staff of the ‘Gouges Gallery of Knightsbridge’ in the 1930’s, Alfred was an eager learner and rapidly developed an expert eye and knowledge of the trade.

He travelled to Egypt to set up a School of Weaving and became a collector and restorer of antique carpets and tapestries, buying and selling from the Souks of Turkey to the auction houses of England. In the 1960’s he established another school of weaving and restoration in Waterford Road where he was joined his son Bernie.

Bonnie Sutton studied fine art at Bryam Shaw Art College, now known as Central St Martin’s, followed by a BTEC in Multi Media at Westminster Kingsway College. In 2005, a few years after grandfather Alfred passed away, she decided, along with her father Bernie, to establish her own rug company, taking on many years of her family tradition and wealth of experiences.

She brought into the mix her training in the arts and breathed fresh air into the business, culminating in the birth of the retail store Knots Ltd in Battersea, London. Developing into a highly creative rug designer with a new vision for the family business.

In 2007, the business developed further into a manufacturing and wholesale provider of high quality Tibetan rugs and their production company came to fruition under the name Knots Rugs Ltd. The launch of the first Knots Rugs production was a spectacular collection of Florence Broadhurst wallpaper designs successfully re-invented into rugs. The collection was first shown at 100% Design in September of that year and was a huge success.

In 2008, another relative, Linny Moss, joined the father and daughter team, further establishing Knots as a strong family run enterprise. A highly creative individual, Linny came to Knots from a successful background in fashion, couture and retail.

After re-branding in 2009, Knots decided to focus on their own unique design sensibilities and launched their first collection produced entirely in-house. ‘English Eccentrics’ first showcased at Domotex in 2010 and was an instant success.

Together they have fused their extensive experience and talent for design to form a formidable partnership, working tirelessly towards a shared vision for Knots Rugs. In 2011 the company opened a new showroom in the prestigious Kings Road, Chelsea.
